Co-ordinate Measuring Machines; an overall analysis after almost 50 years.

Dr. Maurizio Ercole
Independent Researcher - Italy

Presentation abstract

In 2013 it will be 50 years since when the Co-ordinate Measuring Machine made its first appearance on the international scene.
During these five decades the world, the technology and the markets have been subject to many changes; so it has been for the CMM. While last year, at METROMEET 2008, we went through the history of 3D Metrology, we deem now interesting to analyse the current status of this industrial sector under different perspectives:

  • Offer structure.
  • Domains of application.
  • Markets.
  • CMM Industry.
  • CMM Users.

The examination of the above mentioned subjects will allow the generation of a picture that, starting from the Co-ordinate Measuring Machine evolution, will show how the concepts of Quality, Technology and Market have been moving during the years in a strict interrelation. The continuous improvement of high level automation, the development of new markets, the globalisation, etc. have modified the offer/demand structure as well as the organisation of CMM technology within the industry.
As a side benefit of the analysis of offer and demand we shall obtain the outline of the current pending needs and a perspective on the possible future developments.
