Lens assembly of laser diode stacks

Resumen de la ponencia

Stacking laser diode bars together provides powerful light sources. If the stack has equidistant positions of bars, the collimation of the stack is relatively simple. It requires equidistant cylindrical lens array that can be easily made using photo-lithographic processes. In reality, the stacks are far from being perfect as the process of stacking individual bars often results in irregular pattern of lased diode bars and its emitters. The collimation of the beam from such irregular grid of laser diode emitters requires matching distribution of cylindrical lenses within the lens array. Consequently, we have developed a method to measure positions of the laser diode emitters and fabricate matching cylindrical lens array. Due to the extent of deviation of the emitter positions from equidistant grid, even the best fit lens array may not fully correct the beam. In that case, the residual errors can be corrected by means of an additional phaseplate. The phaseplate is laser written using the collimated beam characterisation data.

Dr. Sead Doric is the president of Doric lenses Inc., a photonics company that sells microlenses for laser diode collimation and provides photonics assembly as contract manufacturing service. He started his optics career in Sarajevo as an optical testing engineer. His fascination by optics led him to Imperial College where he earned his PhD working on gradient index optics. The most important result of his research was a new analytical solution to generalized Luneburg lens problem. Later, at National Optics Institute of Canada he has invented the method of making these lenses in the form of cylindrical microlenses. The creation of Doric lenses Inc as a marketing home for his brain child followed. Initially, the photonics industry was busy perfecting laser diodes and relatively little attention was paid to lenses. However, as better diodes hit the market, the applications mushroomed and market for good cylindrical lenses started to surge...
